Slow Twitch explores the intricate connections between town development, memory, and resilience. The exhibition navigates the complexities of memory and identity in an ever-changing environment. Through her work, she poses the question: “What does it mean to remember in a place that’s constantly changing?”

Slow Twitch draws inspiration from Harlow’s extensive network of bike paths and the work of Barbara Hepworth, whose work ‘Contrapuntal Form’ is a significant part of the town’s sculpture collection. The title “Slow Twitch” refers to the slow-twitch fiber used in endurance sports, symbolizing Harlow’s resilience, historical memory, and rich cycling heritage. During the residency program, I collaborated with local artist/designer Harry Watson to design three unconventional bike journeys along specific public sculpture paths, witnessing a migration of visible and invisible memories within the town.

Residency Program details: Since 2016, the Harlow Sculpture Town Artist-in-Residence (STAIR) program has provided an annual residency opportunity for one graduating Master of Sculpture student from the Royal College of Art’s Sculpture Department. Artists are required to challenge themselves in Harlow’s natural environment and create a work for exhibition or installation art at the end of the program. (Website: https://sculpturetown.uk/)
