This is the first collaboration between Wilson Yeung and I based on my graduation work and the theme of PS50.
With Wilson’s background from photography and printmaking as well as his problem solving skills, we have been able to solve a lot difficult problems throughout the process. This is a great opportunity to work with an experienced artist.
As two international students studying in Melbourne, we have similar perspectives on the city in relation to our Chinese cultural background. This kinetic installation is about time and space and based on our experience of being in Melbourne for several years and seeing the change of four seasons.
This installation will use a light box for each of the four seasons and one for the artist statement. A small turntable holding a plaster model of a Chinese character representing each season will revolve in front of a coloured screen. Three LED lights in front of each turntable will cast silhouette of the characters onto the screen, evoking the cycle of seasons and the unfurling of a traditional Chinese scroll.
A silhouette of a four season landscape is created by projecting light onto four plaster models of Chinese characters representing Spring(春),Summer (夏), Autumn (秋) and Winter(冬). And the outcome is reminiscent of Chinese landscape ink painting and Chinese calligraphy.
